2018: The Year of the Dog

2018: The Year of the Dog

Not quite sure what is sadder:  the fact that my last post was about the Olympics in 2016 or that I had not set out enough time to really work on any artwork between then an now.  Whatever the case may be, I apologize for my absence and have renewed my efforts in regularly posting and creating.  Life is too short, but some may say that life really “kicked me in the gut” especially 2017.

For those of you that follow the Chinese New Year, 2018 is the “Year of the Dog” and I was born in 1982 – also the year of the dog…. which means:  THIS IS MY YEAR.  It is with renewed vigor, I pick up my paint brushes and have gone to work.

Recent commission for a birthday present allowed me to paint a gorgeous house.  Since I’ve been “out of practice” I expected to spend a ton of time toiling on this one, but just like the ole’ cliche… it was EXACTLY like riding a bike.  There was a little added pressure as far as creating a piece for someone I knew, but I was able to use that to my advantage.  Just like the paintings of my study abroad trip in Florence, I was able to draw from my friend and my relationship and really try to be inspired by her personality into the end product.  My recent experience downsizing my mom into a more manageable house has really got me thinking about what a home ‘really’ is.  Yes the physical structure is probably what most people think about immediately, but a physical structure can’t be a home without the people that reside in it.  I can probably ramble on and on, but I really did appreciate the opportunity I had to work on this project and hopefully the birthday recipient is happy with the painting.
